Fred
Tumwebaze, Founder
Fred
Tumwebaze started Rescue African Children [ Reach ] in 2002 after his life was
affected by the Aids epidemic. Fred was born on April 27, 1971 in Uganda at
Buwenge village, but at the age of 8 Fred's mother left home and married another
man who latter died of Aids. Fred's mother is also believed to have died of Aids
in October 2006 after a long illness since 2000. From 2000 to the time when she
passed away, she could not even recognize Fred. She was in that state since July, 2000. Fred's sister is also infected and on top of
that Fred has lost 4 brothers to Aids.
After going through all that pain, Fred was led to start REACH as a means of
rescuing African children from the suffering they face daily. Thousands of
children have been left orphans due to AIDS. They have no one to care for them.
Some of them are living without parents, in child-led homes, and others are on
the streets eating from garbage bins. They suffer all types of sexual abuse,
child labor, etc. That is where Rescue African Children "the children's
voice" comes in. It links the orphans and poor needy children with families
in developed countries, for the purpose of initiating a child/sponsor
relationship. And so this ministry was born out of Fred's compassion for those
affected by the AIDS epidemic.
